Firing will be charged separately according to size and space taken up in the kiln.

YOUR FIRST CLASSES
What to expect from hand-building lessons
LESSON 1: Introduction to pottery & pinch pots
In this lesson you will be introduced to the how clay feels in the hand and what it can do when you are moulding it. Sometimes the clay surprises you and sometimes the clay will disappoint. Hang in there it is worth the process!
LESSON 2: Coiling
This lesson is intended for you to learn coiling, which is a foundational technique to ensuring your future works are well built or to add some interesting detailing to your ceramics.
LESSON 3: Underglazes and glazes
Here you will be learning about underglazes and glazes as well as glazing the items made in your first class.
LESSON 4: Slabbing
Finally, you will learn about slabbing. which will be the main technique used to create the basis of your pieces.
This basic lesson plan will seldom be completed in 4 weeks. To learn a whole complicated process with all the dos and don’ts is difficult and has taken me years to master.

Class days are:
Tuesdays: 09:30 am – 12:30 pm
Thursdays: 06:00 pm to 09:00 pm
Venue for classes: Durbanville Scouts Hall
- With the exception of the first four lessons, classes are tailored to what you would like to create. Learn through your own creativity.
- Everything is entirely at your own pace.
- A limited selection of glazes and underglazes is supplied. Any additional or specialty glazes are for your own expense..
- You are welcome to bring food and drinks to class.
- Please clean up your workspace once the class has concluded.
- Aprons are provided, but pottery does get messy, so be sure to wear clothes don’t mind getting dirty.

FAQs
Do I need any experience?
No experience is necessary! Just bring yourself and be prepared to get your hands dirty.
What do I need to bring to my first class?
You just need to bring yourself. Aprons are provided but it’s recommended that you wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You are welcome to bring eats and drinks with you as well.
How much does firing cost?
Firing is charged according to the amount of space your piece(s) take up in the kiln.
Can I buy more clay if I run out?
You can purchase additional bags of clay directly from Reinders or Jo Ceramics. Prices
range from R70 to R90 per 5 kg bag, depending on the type of clay you choose.
What if I miss a class?
You may miss one class and make it up at a later date. If you need to miss more than
one class, please contact Jo to discuss.
